Fields of study
Assiut University, based on the proposal of the council of the Molecular Biology Researches & Studies Institute, grants the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Science through study in the scientific departments shown in the table in Article No. 18 of the Institute Internal Bylaw Document. The name of the scientific department /specialization and the title of the thesis are indicated in the certificate.
Registration Requirements
In addition to what is stated in Article No. 21 of the Institute Internal Bylaw, PhD applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • To hold a Master’s degree in one of the fields of specialization mentioned in Article No. 18 of the Institute Internal Bylaw from an Egyptian university, or an equivalent degree from a recognized scientific institute from the university, provided that his general grade in the academic courses for Master’s degree is not less than "Good or C ".
  • Student is required to devote himself for at least two days/week for the study.
  • Applying students are required to  submit their application along with all required documents (mentioned below) and the necessary forms to the Institute's Postgraduate Office within the designated times.  Postgraduate office will transfer the application and documents to the relevant scientific department to obtain their approval and to appoint a supervising committee that one of its members will serve as the student’s academic advisor. The official date of student enrollment is the date of final approval by the Institute Council after the approval of the University Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Researches Affairs.

Required Documents:

  • Birth certificate.
  • Master's degree.
  • The academic record of the Master's courses.
  • The performance of military service or the approval of the Armed Forces Training and Regulatory Authority to study, or what indicates a delay in or exemption from military service.
  • The approval of the employer for applicants working in the government or public and private business sectors, while those who do not work submit a declaration stating their commitment to attend study.
  • Any other papers that may be requested by Postgraduate Affair of the Institute or the University.
  • For non-Egyptian students, registration is considered in accordance with the procedures for admission of international students determined by the Supreme Council of Universities.

 

Duration of study

  • The period of study for obtaining PhD degree may not be less than three years (before the formation of the Judgment Panel) with a maximum of five years.
  • Student registration will be canceled if he failed to obtain the master’s degree after the end of the fourth year starting from the date of his enrollment. However, the Institute council may decide to keep the registration for other periods upon the request and report submitted by the supervisory committee after the approval of the department council and the Postgraduate studies committee (taking into account the decisions of the university council organizing that matter).

Study plan for PhD degree

  • The total number of hours to obtain a PhD degree is thirty-six credit hours.
  • The competent department council determines the student’s courses that are suitable for the specialization division. Courses with a total of 12 credit hours are to be selected from among the courses curriculum approved by the institute’s council (Dept. code + 6001). The institute’s Vice Dean for postgraduate studies and research approves these selected courses.
  • The average grade of success in the academic courses is not less than "Good or C" in the schedule of estimates, and these hours are calculated within the hours prescribed for the program.
  • The student conducts a thesis research on a topic determined by the main supervisor and approved by the relevant department council, the Postgraduate Studies and Research Committee, and the council of the institute. The student is assigned with 12 credit hours for thesis research with a symbol (Dept. Code + 6000) during preparation of the thesis.
  • The Institute Council may, based on the recommendation of the Supervision Committee, authorize the student to carry out some of his research in another scientific institute or in another recognized body to achieve some of the research requirements.
  • The approval of the Institute Council on student registration is a tacit approval of all courses registered to the student in the registration form.
  • The lists in Appendix No. (1) of the Institute Internal Bylaw show the curricula of various specializations for the master's and doctorate degrees, according to the academic departments of the institute.
  • Articles No. 24, 25, 26 of the Institute Internal Bylaw apply to the rules for study, courses evaluation and exams controls.
  • The student shall receive an academic warning if he failed to obtain an overall average score of "Very Good or B" of studied courses. In such case, upon a request from his supervisory committee, the student is offered to study additional courses until he obtains the required score. This act has to be approved by the department council, the postgraduate studies and research committee, and the Institute’s council.
  • Student has to obtain the required level of language qualification (TOEFL) from one of the accredited centers (at least 450 degrees) or an ELPT certificate or whatever the university decides in this regard.

Conditions for granting the PhD degree
On the recommendation of the competent department council and the Institute’s postgraduate committee, the Institute council recommends that a PhD degree be awarded if the student meets the following conditions:

  • At least three years have passed since the date of registration (approval of the University Council).
  • Accepting the thesis from the Judging Committee, and recommending awarding the degree.
  • Publishing or accepted publication of at least (2) research papers, one of them in one of the international scientific journals or conferences approved by the Institute Council.

Uncovered issues by the Institute Internal Bylaw:
Articles of Law 49 of 1972 and its executive regulations are applied in the absence of a provision in Institute Internal Bylaw .
