Assuit University plants 200 seedlings as part of the Presidential Initiative “100 Million Trees”

Prof. Ahmed Al-Menshawi, President of Assuit University, stressed the university’s keenness to actively participate in the “100 Million Trees” Initiative; within the framework of the university’s role in supporting the efforts of the Egyptian State in the climate change file, doubling the share of green areas per capita, improving air quality, reducing greenhouse gases and improving public health. He also noted that Assuit Governorate gave away 200 seedlings to the university as part of its implementation of the Presidential afforestation initiative called “100 Million Trees”.

The seedlings included ornamental plants such as conocarpus , cassia glauca, thevetia, as well as pomegranate and orange seedlings.

In that context, Prof. Mahmoud Abdel Alim, University Vice-President for Community Service and Environmental Development, made an inspection tour of the Faculty of Agriculture to inspect the 200 seedlings given away by Assuit Governorate to the university. He also inspected a number of greenhouses and units for manufacturing and selling the faculty’s food products to follow up work progress and identify its needs in order to develop work.

In his tour, Prof. Mahmoud Abdel Alim was accompanied by Prof. Adel Mahmoud, Faculty Dean; Prof. Galal Abdel Fattah, Faculty Vice-Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Sayed Shehata, head of the Ornamental Plants Department; Prof. Husseiny Hamada, Professor in the Department of Crops; Mr. Ahmed Mahmoud Farrag, Faculty Registrar and a number of faculty members and employees.

Prof. Mahmoud Abdel Alim first inspected the educational ornamental plant greenhouse which includes a large number of shade plants and rare ornamental plants. He also listened to a brief explanation from Prof. Sayed Shehata about the benefits of these plants and their production. Prof. Sayed Shehata also showed off the 200 seedlings given away by Assuit Governorate to the university to contribute to afforesting the university within the framework of the “100 Million Trees” Initiative.

The University Vice-President, in his visit of the greenhouse, inspected the fruit greenhouses where berries, guava, figs, peaches, lemons, oranges and other fruits are planted. He also inspected the dairy lab, the dairy product outlet, the food product lab and bakery, the gluten-free bread bakery, and the bread bakery goods outlet.

Prof. Mahmoud Abdel Alim praised the scientific and human potentials of the Faculty of Agriculture and its important role in developing agricultural and animal wealth. He also praised the various high quality items that are being produced using sound scientific methods according to the latest scientific research carried out by the faculty. He called for expanding the circle of production to contribute to meeting the needs of the surrounding community, emphasizing the support provided by the University Administration to the faculty in this field.
