Dr. Alaa Atiya, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Assiut University Hospitals, announced the start of procedures to establish a specialized unit for palliative care in the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the main University Hospital. This is in line with the directives of Dr. Maha Kamel Ghanem, Acting President of Assiut University, aimed at developing diagnostic and therapeutic services provided to cancer patients who visit Assiut University Hospitals from various governorates of the Republic and of all ages.
Dr. Alaa Atiya also added that the decision to establish the unit is an investment in the distinguished scientific position of the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, which is the first specialized medical department in this field among universities in Upper Egypt.
Dr. Sameer Shihata, Head of the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, noted that the department will host specialized experts in palliative care from England to hold a workshop as part of the 14th International Conference of the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, scheduled to take place in mid-February. The palliative care workshop aims to train medical staff and nursing teams in this type of treatment. The conference agenda is also expected to include another workshop on radiation therapy, with the participation of experts from England and Germany, as well as a group of specialized professors from the National Cancer Institute, 57357 Hospital, Kasr Al-Ainy Hospital, Alexandria University, and the Department of Oncology at Asyut University.
