Research Abstract

This is a prospective study to explore the future of the regional press in Upper Egypt during the next two decades (2015-2035). It adopted an exploratory model that is based on factors and variables affecting the future of these newspapers. The current situation of these newspapers was analyzed and the economic, social, political, cultural and professional facts and conditions that contributed in shaping this situation were analyzed, and then crystallizing a vision for the future from the perspective of journalists working in the Egyptian press. The study belongs to the future researches, based on the descriptive approach, the use of the in-depth interview tool, and the writing of scenarios, and the application of the survey paper to a sample of journalists and the Egyptian press leaders. The sample is 150 members in a number of newspapers (national, party and regional newspapers). Future scenarios for the regional press in Upper Egypt have been formulated over the next two decades (2015-2035) according to the results of the theoretical and field study, these scenarios are: The optimistic scenario that assumes growth, prosperity and quantitative and qualitative development of the regional press in Upper Egypt depends on changing the political, economic, social and technological conditions that represents the starting point of starting this scenario. The reference scenario assumes the stability of the set of factors and variables affecting the regional press in Upper Egypt and starts operating in the near future, which will extend in the first five years of the proposed period of study, from 2015 to 2020. The pessimistic scenario sees a collapse and regression of the regional press in the future, due to the deterioration of the political, economic, social and professional conditions, which negatively affects the elements of the communication process of the regional press (contents, communication, and the public).
